Hobbes Scholarship

Established in 1994 by Dr. Aspros and his wife, the Hobbes Scholarship is awarded annually to a Cornell Veterinary student who ranks high in the class and has demonstrated a deep appreciation for the ethical standards of veterinary medicine.

The cost of a veterinary education has risen dramatically over the past 20 years, as state support for higher education has steadily decreased while tuition cost have relentlessly increased. Graduate debt levels are daunting for young veterinarians, and this may limit the pool of highly qualified applicants to veterinary colleges in the future. While the Hobbes Scholarship makes a modest contribution to alleviating this debt, it helps. The annual award is looked upon as an honor for the recipients and has been very much appreciated by the students we’ve assisted.

Clients who wish to help support these veterinary students can contribute to the Hobbes Scholarship using Visa, MasterCard or American Express by calling 607.253.3745 and designate the gift to the scholarship, or go online at www.giving.cornell.edu. Choose the College of Veterinary Medicine and “Other” and write in the Hobbes Scholarship.

Pie Fund

Pie

The Pie Fund was created in memory of one of our very special patients. Presently, the fund is small, but we make regular contributions to help it grow and hope you can, too.

The Pie Fund's purpose is to make critical veterinary care available to companion animals when their families can not otherwise afford it. Focused on pets with cancer, grants are made in cases where medical intervention has a good probability of increasing the length or quality of life, and where genuine financial need can be established. The Pie Fund is a recognized 501c-3 charitable organization, and donations are tax-deductible.

While advances in veterinary medicine have paralleled those in human medicine, the costs have increased accordingly. Even in affluent Westchester County there are caring pet owners who are forced to weigh the cost of care for a cherished animal against other family imperatives. The work of the Fund, under professional guidance, is to identify cases where we can help financially when surgery, chemotherapy or medication could make a real difference.

The Fund is named for Pie (pictured above), a West Highland White Terrier who lived with Lynn and Marc Wunderman. Despite contending with both lymphoma and pancreatic cancer, she enjoyed an excellent quality of life and a normal life-span. This was only possible because she received first-rate veterinary care throughout both illnesses. Pie's people and a group of friends recognized that the cost of care could easily have been out of reach for a less fortunate family, and they created the Pie Fund in response.

Administrative, legal and other costs incurred by the fund are paid by the founders so that every dollar donated will go for medical care. If you'd like to make a donation you can do so at their websiteor for more information please contact them at: info@piesfund.org
